Natural & Holistic

Grooming rooted in
passion & purpose

I’m Laura, founder of grounded grooming, a calm, holistic, home based salon where your dog’s wellbeing comes before everything else. As a proud dog owner myself, I understand exactly how much trust you place in the person who cares for your dog, and I take that responsibility to heart with every single groom.

I use only natural, dog-safe products — no harsh chemicals, no harmful fragrances, nothing I wouldn’t use on my own little one. Every groom is tailored to your individual dog, in a quiet, one-at-a-time environment where they can feel truly at ease.

Experienced with the challenging ones. I have specialist experience in difficult grooms, anxious dogs, and neglect cases — bringing patience, skill and genuine compassion to dogs that others may find difficult.

Natural Care Advice

A little consistent care at home goes a long way. Here are my tips for keeping your dog healthy, comfortable and looking their best between visits.

Brushing Your Dog at Home

Regular brushing is one of the most impactful things you can do between grooms. It prevents matting, distributes natural oils, keeps the coat healthy and builds a lovely routine with your dog.

How often? Short coats: weekly. Medium coats: 2–3 times a week. Long or curly coats: daily.

Always brush before bathing — wet mats tighten and become much harder to remove.

Use a slicker brush for the body, then a wide-tooth comb to check close to the skin.

Pay extra attention to armpits, behind ears, under the collar and the groin — mats love to form in these spots.

Keep sessions short, calm and positive — treats and praise make it something your dog looks forward to.

Washing Your Dog at Home

Bathing between grooms keeps your dog fresh — but doing it right protects their skin and coat. Always opt for a natural, dog-specific shampoo free from sulphates and artificial fragrances.

Brush thoroughly before getting your dog wet to remove any debris and tangles.

Use lukewarm water — dogs are sensitive to temperature. Test it on your wrist first.

Rinse, rinse, rinse — residue left in the coat is a leading cause of itching and skin irritation.

Dry fully before letting your dog outside — a damp coat attracts dirt and can cause skin problems.

Look for oat, aloe, chamomile or coconut-based natural formulas for sensitive skin.

Looking After Your Dog’s Teeth

Dental hygiene is one of the most overlooked aspects of dog care. Most dogs show signs of gum disease by age 3 if teeth aren’t cared for — yet it’s so easy to prevent.

Aim to brush regularly, 3 times a week or more is ideal, with an enzymatic dog toothpaste.

Never use human toothpaste — fluoride and xylitol are toxic to dogs.

Start slowly — let your dog taste the paste first, then introduce the brush gradually.

Raw carrots and appropriate toys help reduce plaque naturally between brushes.

Bad breath, yellow tartar or flinching when you touch their mouth — see your vet promptly.

Nail Care Between Grooms

Overgrown nails cause pain, affect posture and can lead to joint problems over time. It’s one of the most commonly neglected areas of dog care.

If you can hear clicking on hard floors, the nails need trimming.

Most dogs need attention every 4–6 weeks, though activity level and breed varies this.

Pavements wear nails naturally — dogs mainly on grass may need more frequent trims.

Clip small amounts only to avoid the quick — the pink blood vessel inside the nail.

Not confident? Nail trims are available as a standalone appointment — no full groom needed.

Ear Care & Maintenance

Dogs with floppy ears — Spaniels, Basset Hounds, Poodles — are especially prone to infections due to reduced airflow. Weekly checks make a real difference.

Healthy ears are pale pink inside with no odour and minimal wax.

Never insert anything into the ear canal — only clean what you can see.

Use a natural dog ear cleaner on a cotton pad to gently wipe the inner flap.

After swimming or baths, gently dry the outer ear to prevent moisture build-up.

Scratching, head shaking, dark discharge or strong smell — see your vet promptly.

How Often Should I Book a Groom?

Every dog is different — but here are general guidelines by coat type to help you plan ahead.

Short, smooth coats (Labradors, Boxers): every 8–12 weeks for a bath and de-shed.

Medium coats (Golden Retrievers, Border Collies): every 6–8 weeks to manage shedding and coat health.

Curly or wool coats (Poodles, Cockapoos, Doodles): every 4–6 weeks — these mat quickly without regular grooming.

Long coats (Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Maltese): every 4–6 weeks with daily brushing at home essential.

Regular grooms are quicker, more comfortable and less expensive than infrequent ones.
